  Image: A spray of blooms in a white vase in a dim lit room. How do you meet people? Reluctantly.  I’ve met thousands upon thousands; at times it felt like more than my fair share.  Observe and fix was a role.  Now I observe and wonder aloud.  This week, patches within the mist revealed I’d completed a full cycle mapping the night sky; Rigil Kentaurus and Toliman appeared front and centre to my writing desk.  Medium density at night, dogs off their leash to fuck in the street. Smooth by Siv Parker Update Tuesday 23 February 2015, 12.30pm:  This blog post was prompted by a recent incident in Australia.   Rob Thomas best known as singer/songwriter of Matchbox20 is currently touring.  H e said some things at a concert. It triggered a social media firestorm.  He apologized quickly, twice on Facebook (links included below). Review: Umbre (Shadows)

UMBRE HBO produced 8 part series New to SBS OnDemand This review is riddled with spoilers. Adapted from an Australian series, Small Town Gangster (which I can’t recall seeing), HBO made the decision to adapt an Australian story to a Romanian setting : Bucharest to be exact. Umbre translates as 'Shadows' in Romanian. I’d been drawn to watch Umbre after reading it’s irresistible marketing pitch – it’s a crime series, in the style of Breaking Bad.  First impressions were good, getting straight into a scene that was both intriguing and set the tone for the entire series.  The palate is dirty yellows and greys.   The opening scene gives us our first sight of our star, and it’s always good to see actors that are unfamiliar.    A good start from the opening scene, and then boom – the characters started to speak. I read The Knockout again last night, first time in many years.  Many of the participants have passed on; young and old they slipped into the life expectancy gap. ... THE KNOCKOUT a tweetyarn from a long time ago   For a time, I worked in a remote community. My job was teaching homeless kids how to make films. Number 1 job criteria: community engagement. * The project target group was 14-17yo kids. I had 12-20yo’s & younger who wanted to join in with their family members. I had to manage that. * I was new to town & they didn’t know me. They told me pretty much everyday for the 1 st year. Who are you? Why are you here? I liked my job. * We ran our youth projects on limited funds. My job

My grandson has reached an age where he will ask his daddy to call me so he can get on, he wants to share some news. It’s either a question and a quick chat, or it's to tell me that he is disappointed.  I coo at him and talk about being happy about something that he can do or look forward to. His latest disappointment – he can’t make films and put them on youtube.  Both parents said no.  A definite 'no' from both of them.  He knows there are rules about online spaces, and some rules are non-negotiable. My grandson is under 10 years of age.  I haven’t posted a photo of him for years, and what made it into my social media feed was blurred or taken from the rear. He only watches shows with permission and is only on-line when under supervision.   He is a sensitive child in some ways, robust in others.   How much land do Aboriginal Australian people own, control or co-manage? Australia’s Indigenous Land Estate (2024) The state of Western Australia- the land mass is nearly five times the size of Texas, and twice the size of Alaska. Land tenure recognises our land rights. Ownership comes in many forms depending on the dispossession history of each state or territory. It has never been easy.   In 2026 a non-Indigenous person attempted to set off an explosive device amongst a 300-strong group of Aboriginal people, lots of little kids, and allies wearing the red, black and yellow colours in an annual peaceful rally in Perth, the capital of Western Australia. In Australia the grand daughter of the enslaved can own the land in two generations. Legally, ethically and permanently. Always was, always will be Aboriginal land. .... Budget 2014 - The Basics

If you were hoping to find one neat package of what Indigenous people can expect from the Budget 2014, you are not going to find it. Because of the diversity of black lives, it would be easier to say look at the whole budget, because it all impacts on Indigenous individuals and communities. A brief over view is here –   Budget Winners and Losers As per the link, Indigenous spending is a ‘Loser’ which - at a loss of half a billion dollars over the life of the Budget 2014 measures - is somewhat of an understatement. Commitments to reducing Indigenous disadvantage are summed up in strategies and targets around ‘Closing the Gap’, where improving Indigenous life expectancy spans inclusion of a a complex network of social determinants of health. I could have written why some people didn’t like the SBS/NITV event  First Contact before I watched the three-part series, the talk shows, the news and read hours and hours of Twitter. I could have beaten every one to the punchline: when people think like racists, it is harmful and in the right circumstances people will educate themselves. What happens when Aboriginal people are removed from their lands? There are vast areas of land in the Western Australian inland that are classed as uninhabitable because there is no water. That’s not quite right. There is water, it’s just deep underground and you need to know where to look. How Aboriginal people survived in these places without access to rivers and regular rainfall was by maintaining soaks, the ‘native water wells’.
