Making a difference




You wouldn’t think it was the same country, reading the latest round of released papers, the 1992-93 Australian cabinet documents.

Cabinet papers from 1992 and 1993, released by the National Archives of Australia on January 1, (also) detail how Australia wrestled with Indigenous issues and the historic Native Title legislationfollowing the High Court's landmark Mabo ruling.

What will we look like in another thirty years? And how will we get there, in a post-truth world?

Smooth by Siv Parker Update Tuesday 23 February 2015, 12.30pm:  This blog post was prompted by a recent incident in Australia.   Rob Thomas best known as singer/songwriter of Matchbox20 is currently touring.  H e said some things at a concert. It triggered a social media firestorm.  He apologized quickly, twice on Facebook (links included below). Light the Darkness by Siv Parker The dogs were still pups and hadn’t mastered how to creep from their baskets across the carpet to the verandah doors without catching the pile with their nails. The scratching woke me up.   Must have been about 2am.   I didn’t need a torch to scan my front yard, but I took one anyway.   I lived on a large corner block in the good part of town.   Was so bright, I could have leaned on my fence and read a book under the street lights. Romper Stomper – The Series, Season 1 on Stan Midway impressions The series makes Romper Stomper, The Movie look like a masterpiece. I knew all about the controversy of the movie first and then the series, not because I was interested in a fresh round of outrage.  I was interested in where the story went after the movie ended.     It’s hardly surprising that I have high thresholds for violence on screen.   I have lived in Australia all my life. Blaming a tv show or a movie for that matter for the violence and hate that some will bear down on others is only part of the story.   It can contribute but it’s not in itself enough.    Rancid masculinity is manifest in a myriad of ways, in places town and country, and in people rich and poor.   If the concern is that it is enhanced by violence and dehumanization pouring out of screen into people’s homes, then why don’t we start with a campaign to eliminate porn?   Or Game of Thro...

Review: Umbre (Shadows)

UMBRE HBO produced 8 part series New to SBS OnDemand This review is riddled with spoilers. Adapted from an Australian series, Small Town Gangster (which I can’t recall seeing), HBO made the decision to adapt an Australian story to a Romanian setting : Bucharest to be exact. Umbre translates as 'Shadows' in Romanian. I’d been drawn to watch Umbre after reading it’s irresistible marketing pitch – it’s a crime series, in the style of Breaking Bad.  First impressions were good, getting straight into a scene that was both intriguing and set the tone for the entire series.  The palate is dirty yellows and greys.   The opening scene gives us our first sight of our star, and it’s always good to see actors that are unfamiliar.    A good start from the opening scene, and then boom – the characters started to speak. Tenderness

When it flooded people would come from all around the district to see the valley full of quiet brown water. We strangers to one another, lived on the top of the ridge, with its five houses, an old pub and two street lights.   People wondered why any of us were there, why such a grand hotel, surrounded by sprawling queenslanders with elaborate gables and six paned windows lined a road that swept down into a valley in the middle of nowhere.   There was a time long before mine, when we were the town before the town up and left and moved to higher ground across the river.   There’d been more houses but over time all but ours had collapsed, their concrete slabs freely and my guess permanently snuffed out by the lush tropical vegetation.   No one was coming back out here.   They might stop at the pub for lunch or a beer garden band on a Sunday afternoon but that was the extent of it.   Because of the floods mostly.   The rain was so heavy some ...

Feline good going into 2018

I don’t mind how strange I seem when I answer the door. It’s my place. I didn't know the woman at the door in dove grey exercise gear and a worried expression. 'Do you have a cat?' I knew and she could clearly see that there were three bowls of cat food, a pet box and a cosy cardboard box of cat bed proportions that contained a floofed-up Qantas blanket. 'No. I don’t…have a cat.' Her story was a short one. She’d moved in to #3 earlier in the week and by late Friday afternoon was door knocking trying to locate the owner of a deceased cat she had driven past on the front steps of #2. I live at #5. The end of the line with the largest most glorious expanse of concrete I’ve ever had the pleasure of calling my front yard.   A fringe of tiers of manicured shrubbery reaching to the windows surrounds the property. I flew into turbulence but when the pilot crackled 'bumpy', he actually meant ‘the air will shake the plane violently up, down, and side to side and those with a window seat may care to watch the wings bounce’ but even then the message would have been lost on the man with ear plugs, who still attempted to stagger and flail his way to the bathroom. The air hostess was trying to indicate, as she clung to the back of a chair with one arm and hooked a knee around an arm rest that it was unsafe for him to roam.   He bobbed his head at her - lord only knows what he thought she was mouthing at him. She did the only thing she could and yanked on the cord and his brown eyes appeared from above his glasses as he registered the musical intermission. 'Sit down will you!'   He saw she meant business and turned as if to make his way, an elbow in the head for every person he passed, back to his seat halfway back up the plane. It was just after 2am on Monday night and I’d fallen asleep on the lounge and left the tv on.  I’d watched the broadcast of the siege in the Lindt chocolate café in Sydney for hours so I was fairly sure what was happening from the angle of the camera.  I’d kept watching once I’d heard that family members of hostages had gathered around Martin Place. I'd made mental lists of what I would have taken down to the site. I could have volunteered for coffee runs or offered some fold up chairs or just sat in silence, or moved back and not got in the way. I could have done something.
