Smooth by Siv Parker Update Tuesday 23 February 2015, 12.30pm:  This blog post was prompted by a recent incident in Australia.   Rob Thomas best known as singer/songwriter of Matchbox20 is currently touring.  H e said some things at a concert. It triggered a social media firestorm.  He apologized quickly, twice on Facebook (links included below).   Image: A spray of blooms in a white vase in a dim lit room. How do you meet people? Reluctantly.  I’ve met thousands upon thousands; at times it felt like more than my fair share.  Observe and fix was a role.  Now I observe and wonder aloud.  This week, patches within the mist revealed I’d completed a full cycle mapping the night sky; Rigil Kentaurus and Toliman appeared front and centre to my writing desk.  Medium density at night, dogs off their leash to fuck in the street. Snarling and snapping at each other, no-one's picking up their shit.  So I looked up, and nothing compares. If you were hoping to find one neat package of what Indigenous people can expect from the Budget 2014, you are not going to find it. Because of the diversity of black lives, it would be easier to say look at the whole budget, because it all impacts on Indigenous individuals and communities. A brief over view is here –   Budget Winners and Losers As per the link, Indigenous spending is a ‘Loser’ which - at a loss of half a billion dollars over the life of the Budget 2014 measures - is somewhat of an understatement. Commitments to reducing Indigenous disadvantage are summed up in strategies and targets around ‘Closing the Gap’, where improving Indigenous life expectancy spans inclusion of a a complex network of social determinants of health. Review: Umbre (Shadows)

UMBRE HBO produced 8 part series New to SBS OnDemand This review is riddled with spoilers. Adapted from an Australian series, Small Town Gangster (which I can’t recall seeing), HBO made the decision to adapt an Australian story to a Romanian setting : Bucharest to be exact. Umbre translates as 'Shadows' in Romanian. I’d been drawn to watch Umbre after reading it’s irresistible marketing pitch – it’s a crime series, in the style of Breaking Bad.  First impressions were good, getting straight into a scene that was both intriguing and set the tone for the entire series.  The palate is dirty yellows and greys.   The opening scene gives us our first sight of our star, and it’s always good to see actors that are unfamiliar.    A good start from the opening scene, and then boom – the characters started to speak. 9 Posts Before Christmas...Tips for interviewing children in trauma #Cairns

The public's interest in the unfolding tragic events around the deaths of eight children earlier this week in Cairns is reflected in the trending topics and expressions of disbelief and shock on social media.  Yesterday was another shocking installment when news spread that the mother of seven and aunt of one was expected to be charged with having caused the death of all eight children. I've seen the annual notices of the need for self care and reminders that for many people, the Christmas period is a difficult time of the year. For many of us however, we still can't understand and want to know how and why this dreadful event occured.   I had decided not to watch TV over the past 24 hours because there is a limit to what I want to see while I process this overwhelmingly sad and horrifying incident.
