Home Truths by Siv Parker It splatters across every community.  It congeals around every decision.  It is the stench that clouds every fresh idea.  It stains every wasted opportunity. The Aboriginal community is awash with violence.   And then it slunk into social media like a mangy dog, and then the outside world started to get a look at what had afflicted Indigenous families – the families that hadn’t found ways to prosper and nurture their own. Violence that has gotten under the skin and into the blood. Violence that stuns, maims and kills. It is part of how we talk, meet, live and love.   Either we are avoiding it, rebuilding after suffering it or reprogramming after being decimated by it. This is Deadly Blog Post No 2 - part of the Deadly Bloggers Blog Carnival 2015 . For more, follow the @deadlybloggers   updates. I was reading the newspaper, back in the day when my hot fingered pawing would smudge the print a little on the page.  Those were the days when it was rare to read news from home in the paper.  Not just of my remote bush town, but news from any of the short main street towns with the long Aboriginal names out that way, so I’d consumed half of the piece greedily looking for family references before I choked up on a bitter pill. The Indigenous bloke heavily quoted in the piece had said that he was best placed to speak his mind on all things political for mob out that way because the majority of my sleepy little town were doped up on antidepressants. Feline good going into 2018

I don’t mind how strange I seem when I answer the door. It’s my place. I didn't know the woman at the door in dove grey exercise gear and a worried expression. 'Do you have a cat?' I knew and she could clearly see that there were three bowls of cat food, a pet box and a cosy cardboard box of cat bed proportions that contained a floofed-up Qantas blanket. 'No. I don’t…have a cat.' Her story was a short one. She’d moved in to #3 earlier in the week and by late Friday afternoon was door knocking trying to locate the owner of a deceased cat she had driven past on the front steps of #2. I live at #5. The end of the line with the largest most glorious expanse of concrete I’ve ever had the pleasure of calling my front yard.   A fringe of tiers of manicured shrubbery reaching to the windows surrounds the property. An occasional short in three parts. I. Icecream I didn’t really have any spare time on my hands but when he asked me if I would help him with his homework I said sure, I am free on Sunday afternoon. I’d wondered how he divided his time. I knew roughly what he did when I saw him outside of his room, but I wondered what time felt like now that he wasn’t counting down to a release date.  He’d had plenty of those. He’d done the sums out loud for my benefit. Juvenile homes, jail, more jail, longer jail, then a jail sentence on the way to being endless. By my calculations he’d spent about five years on the outside spread jaggedly over a generation. I could tell you, that with his institutionalized skin and muscles he could have passed for 35. But he surveys the free world through ancient eyes. He would see straight through my weakness. Hitting Home by Siv Parker Dear reader, this post is full of triggers.  But quite frankly, I am not dragging the dead carcass of endless, inexcusable and swiftly smoothed over 'male on female violence' into 2016.  Writing gets it out of my head. I rarely see actual violence these days.   But I know what it looks like.  Years ago I was part of the unofficial rescue team for my partner’s brothers – both of them, his brothers who drunk or sober, high or low, beat their girlfriends, destroyed their homes and cried about how they were the unlucky ones. I tell you, I wasn’t very sympathetic. I didn’t like either of them. I disliked the mother even more, who would ring at all hours expecting us to retrieve one or the other and some days BOTH of them because she was worried the police might be called. Reflections on Bourke

I spent three years in Bourke. A few people said to me when I’d announced my next career move was going to be Bourke, ‘have you heard about Bourke?’ …’It’s got problems’ … ‘It’s dangerous.’ For some people, it might be. I had been around, but I had never seen anything like it. I said I would be there for three years. And I was, give or take a week or so. I have nothing short of respect for the people I met in Bourke. ---------- I ran a crisis service for kids in Bourke. I was backed up by a big quiet, unassuming and purposeful guy, and it wouldn’t have been possible to live and work there without him. My 14 to 17 year old clients were what the locals called the ‘bad kids’. The kids who were not going to school, who were in and out of the courthouse and juvenile detention, who caused trouble in the street, and who didn’t have access to safe and secure accommodation in Bourke.
